Summary

A letter from Wilhelm Bleek to Sir George Grey, sent from Cape Town on 12 April 1871. Bleek has found a way of sending Grey the promised 18-volume Native Languages set and other duplicate African language books from the SA Library collection. He reports two recent papers submitted to scholarly societies and hopes for their publication. Huxley has requested an earlier paper, which Bleek reminds Grey to forward as he has the only copy. Bleek describes how his Bushman studies continue with two Bushmen living in the household: one older and one younger (he includes a photograph of |a!kunta. ). He reports how one of his wife's two sisters staying with them (Lucy Lloyd) is more advanced in the "practical knowledge" of the language and has the time to devote to its study. Also, Jemima is pregnant, due in July, and the family recently visited Kalkbay, collecting specimens for Ernst Haeckel. Bleek ends with a list of Parliamentary Papers and pamphlets, etc. he is sending Grey.
