List (handwritten by Wilhelm Bleek)
Page 2 of an informal list of themes and titles for Wilhelm Bleek's Het Volksblad opinion pieces from 24 June 1862 to 4 October 1866 (excluding his Kotzé v. Murray feature for 25 August 1864). Written on a recycled Combrinck & Ross (f. 1830) billing document dated 1864. n.d. MS. Unlike the tenor of his academic work, his journalistic opinion pieces are ideologically charged and overtly subjective. Bleek's 'Leaders' featured more infrequently before appearing semi-regularly on Thursdays and occasionally on Tuesdays or Saturdays. Bleek scrutinises local and foreign public, private, and faith sector actors while self-discoursing on Southern African, Oceanian, American, and European events. Dr Otto Hartung Spohr's collation list re-dates Bleek's 'June 7th' article on railways to 7 July 1864. The list's creation date is unknown, but its coverage shows it did not precede the work. Bleek erred when dating several of his opinion pieces, making Spohr's list more reliable. In 1899, Combrinck & Co. joined with the Imperial Cold Storage & Supply Company Ltd, an antecedent of Dairy Belle.
